Founded in 2011 in the heart of the Hunter Valley, Valley Barrel Furniture was born from a deep respect for craftsmanship and material integrity. What began in a small backyard workshop has evolved into a refined Australian furniture studio dedicated to transforming retired wine barrels into enduring design pieces.

Formerly Vought Wooden Furniture, the business rebranded in 2017 to reflect its specialised focus and connection to one of Australia’s most iconic wine regions. Today, we create reclaimed oak wine barrel furniture for discerning homeowners, cellar doors and hospitality venues across Australia.

Each piece begins its life in a working winery. Over years of maturation, the oak absorbs wine, develops patina and carries the markings of its cooperage origins. We preserve these characteristics — the deep grain, subtle staining and authentic stamps — allowing the timber’s history to remain visible within a refined, contemporary form.

Our philosophy is grounded in circular design. Rather than allowing premium French and American oak barrels to be discarded, we extend their life through considered craftsmanship. Sustainability, for us, is not a trend — it is a responsibility to honour exceptional material.

Steel hoops are carefully re-secured and reinforced where required, maintaining both structural integrity and visual authenticity.

Each barrel is individually assessed for grain, strength and character before construction begins. We preserve the natural charring and wine tones where appropriate, enhancing — never masking — the story within the timber.
